It is already quite a long time since KONG17 ended, and it is time to publish the first part of my personal log from that DXpedition. The same log has also been sent to the Norwegian DX News, to be published in that magazine’s 2nd issue for 2008.

The first time I heard KOA was during a DXpedition in 1988. And I have heard it numerous times since then. For some reason, though, I cannot remember having reported KOA until recently. Well, I am glad I sent a report after all these years. After a couple of days, a nice and informative e-mail arrived in my inbox, from Jan Chadwell, Chief Engineer at KOA in Denver, CO. Besides confirming my report, Mr. Chadwell tells a little about KOA’s history. He concludes his letter like this: “It will be interesting in the coming years, with IBOC digital in the US and DRM digital in most of Europe, to see the impact on AM MW and SW around the world. Radio listening as we now know it may well become a thing of the past.”

I do not receive e-mail from Montana every day, but today I did. A nice e-mail just arrived from Tom O’Neill, Production Director at KXTL, Butte MT on 1370 kHz. He kindly confirmed my reception of the station on October 14, 2007. Thank you, Tom.

A re-send of a reception report to WFNN “Sports Radio 13-30 The Fan” Erie PA 1330 resulted in a nice and friendly response from Charles G. Lelievre in less than 20 minutes. He confirmed my October 13, 2007 reception of the station. Yet another KONG17 logging.

QSL no. 5 so far this week just arrived: “Dear Tore…CONGRATULATIONS on becoming part of the KIT listening audience…” writes Dave Ettl, Program Director at KIT Yakima WA. Thank you, Dave. KIT was heard in Kongsfjord on October 17, 2007.

Not exactly what I had expected today, since I thought the next QSL would drop in via e-mail from somewhere in the USA – but no, I was wrong. What a nice item to find in the mailbox these days; an envelope with Japanese stamps on it! It contained a full data QSL card and some information from NHK-2 Naha, Okinawa, which is broadcasting on 1125 kHz. The station was heard with a quite good signal during their close-down seremony on October 15, 2007. KONG17, of course.

I found this one in my e-mail inbox this morning; an e-mail with a QSL letter attached to it, from Michael H. Gilbert, Regional Broadcast Electrical Engineer. He confirmed my October 14, 2007 reception of KVRI. This is the 3rd response I receive to the follow-ups I sent yesterday. What’s next? :-)

QSL no. 2 today just received! David Daniels, Program Director at KKNE Honolulu HI just sent me an e-mail in response to a follow-up report I sent less than an hour ago. Quick and nice reply, and he confirms my reception of KKNE on October 23, 2006. The station was heard with a good signal during KONG15, and also during KONG17, of course. :-)

A short but nice and positive e-mail just arrived from Bob Rosenthal, General Manager at KCID. He confirmed my reception of the station on October 19, 2006. Again a KONG17 hearing, like most stations these days. :-)
