One of the more unexpected catches during KONG17 was KWBY in Woodburn OR on 940 kHz. It surfaced with a good signal for a couple of minutes on October 17, 2007, before the Hawaiian station went back and drowned everything else on the frequency. :-)
When returning back from my Christmas vacation, one of the first things I had to do was to check my e-mail. And what did I find? Quite a lot, in fact, but the most interesting e-mail came from Ronald J. Dot’o Sr., Corporate Engineer for KWBY. In his long and friendly e-mail he confirmed my reception of the station, and also gave some information about the station and the sister stations. According to him, KWBY’s night-time power is only 200 watts! Well, 200 watts and some good reception conditions was enough for the signal to hit our antennas in Kongsfjord, anyway. :-) Thank you very much, Ronald!

After a follow-up, a brief e-mail arrived this evening from Promotions Director/Host Danette Golden at KHNC Johnstown CO 1360. She kindly verified my October 17, 2007 reception of the station. KHNC was heard several times during the KONG17 DXpedition, often with a strong and clear signal. Thank you for your verification, Danette!

Verifications from Japanese stations – both NHK and the commercial ones – seem to be quite rare these days. Even more appreciated are the few that we get, then. This morning I found my first e-mail QSL from Japan, when I opened an e-mail from Mr. Makoto Mukai, who is working for the engineering department at the NHK station in Kitami. He kindly verified my October 17, 2007 reception of JOKP NHK-1 Kitami on 1188 kHz, which was heard with local ID at 09:59 UTC that day. Mr. Mukai even told me that a “snail-mail” QSL was on the way to me, so I will keep a finger or two to my mailbox the coming days. Thank you for your kind response, Mr. Mukai!
