First KONG13 report verified

Posted October 28th, 2005 by TJ

The first five reports for stations heard during KONG13 were sent from here on Monday the 24th. Late yesterday evening I received the first verification, an e-mail from Jim Driftmier confirming my reception of KORL Honolulu HI, 690. My first Hawaiian station is hereby verified!

KORL was some of a mystery to us for a while. One morning we heard a station behind the CBC station on 690 kHz playing salsa music. We thought about Mexico or something else from Latin America, but the signal was best heard on our 30 degrees antenna, pointed towards Alaska and Hawaii and the eastern Pacific. According to our reference literature, KORL should be primarily broadcasting in Japanese … Hmmm … After a while, a weak announcement in Spanish was heard, with something that turned out to be an ID. A full ID in English and Spanish was heard crystal clear some minutes later, and KORL was in the log.

According to the message from Jim Driftmier, KORL-690 is broadcasting Musica Latino Mon-Fri 6pm to 10pm. In addition, they have Filipino music Mon-Fri 2am to 5am, and all day Saturday.
